(This file is written in the hope that some Dickey family researchers
may read it and help me to clarify the relationships between the
Dickey and Leech families--in York Co. SC, Lawrence Co. AL and/or
wherever.)

Dickey and Leech Associations
In Lawrence Co.AL ca 1820 Clarissa Finesta Leech, sister of
the writer's gg grandfather, married John Dickey Blair, son of Andrew
Blair and grandson of John Dickey of York Co. SC and Logan Co. KY.

I have not discovered any other blood kinship between these
two Scotch-Irish families. However they lived successively in close
proximity in York Co. SC ante Revolution to early 19th century, and
later in Lawrence Co. in the 1830's, and probably before. It seems
likely there may have been an intermarriage at some point. They were
certainly "cousins' cousins" as this file will set forth in some
detail.

Earliest Days

In 1718 Rev Boyd of Ireland prepared a petition for admittance
of Irish settlers into America. Among the signers were Leechs,
Dickey, and many other Scotch-Irish families who figure in this
history, ie. Moor, Nesmith, King, Ross, Kerr, and Wilson, and many
others.

(The following came from the Dickey history provided to the
writer by Cousin Cyndi and many other members of the Dickey family):

One of the earliest Dickey immigrants to this country was
William Dickey, Sr. (1683-1748) He was born in Muckamore, County
Antrim, Ireland and died in Sadsbury TWP, Chester County, Pennsylvania
William, Sr. had 3 sons, William, Jr., James and John; they will be
briefly described here.

His son William Dickey, Jr. was born in Ireland in 1712 and
married Margaret Wilson. One of their children, Margaret Dickey,
married William Kilpatrick, born 1734. Their daughter, Catherine
Kilpatrick, was born in 1753 in Anson Co. NC (very likely in the area
that later became York Co. SC). Catherine died in York Co. in 1821.
Is this the Catherine Kilpatrick who married Andrew Kerr and had 11
children. They are both buried in Bethel Cemetery in York Co.
together with members of the Leech family!! This reflects the
association of the Leech family with Dickeys and Kilpatricks.

William Dickey, Sr.'s son James Dickey, born 1713 in Ireland
and died in 1792 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

William Dickey's son John Dickey b: 1708 d: 1772 in New
Castle County, Delaware

This William Dickey, Sr. family had descendants who settled in York
Co. SC. He may have been the brother of George Dickey of Antrim whose
Family History is set forth by Dennis Dickey and many others. (He may
also be the ancestor of the William Dickey who appears in the Lawrence
Co. AL census in 1830.):

Martha,

Susanna.

Three of John Dickey's sons: John, Robert, and David served in Col.
William Bratton's regiment. George was a lieutenant in the New
Acquisition Regiment (York Co.), and William also served there. (from
The Dickey-Stephenson Connection by Elmer Oris Parker in the Chester
Co., SC "Bulletin" June 2000.)

Of these children John and George are of special interest in this
history:

John Dickey (1740-1802) married Sarah Robinson. In the York
Co. SC census of 1790 he was adjacent to the writer's ancestor, David
Leech, Esq . His will was probated in 1802 and David Leech, Jr. was
one of the witnesses.

The children of John and Sarah Dickey were John, Jr., Matthew,
David, William, James, Rebeckah, Sarah, and Martha. It is the
writer's belief that in 1818 John, Jr. took preliminary steps to
acquire land in Twp 6S 9W in Lawence Co. AL. He died in 1826.

John Leech, son of David Leech of York Co., had also acquired
land in that township. The 1830 census shows John Leech and William
Dickey in close proximity. Leech died in 1835 and John A Dickey took
part in the sale of his property. I believe that William and John A.
Dickey of Lawrence Co. AL may have been sons of John Dickey, Jr. and
grandsons of John and Sarah Robinson Dickey.

George Dickey, born 1742 in Albemarle Co.VA, where he married
Mary (Polly) Scott
young man moved with his father to Mecklenburg Co. NC to the area
which later became York Co. SC. After the Revolution he moved to
Logan Co. KY, where his daughter, Jane (or Jean) married Andrew Blair
of Guilford Co. NC. Andrew and Jean Dickey Blair were in Lawrence
Co.AL in the 1820's, and there their son, John Dickey Blair, married
Clarissa Leech, the daughter of John Leech and granddaughter of David
Leech, Esq. of York Co. SC.

George Dickey continued to move, some say to Maury Co. TN and
then to Lauderdale Co. AL where he was said to have died. Others give
Madison Co. AL as the place of his death. Some of his children found
their way to Franklin Co. TN and later Lincoln Co. TN.

George and Mary Scott had sons Ephraim, John, and George plus
7 daughters--Rebecca,Martha, Jean, Molly, Eleanor, Nancy and Sarah.
Some of this family was found in 1830 in Franklin Co. TN, close to
David Leech and Minos B. Feemster, both of whom had been neighbors of
the Dickeys in York Co. and later moved south and west back into AL
and into MS.

Ephraim Dickey was in Franklin Co. TN as early as 1812 and as
late as 1830. In 1840 he was in Lincoln Co. TN.

In 1833 John C. Dickey acted as trustee for the property of
James Killpatrick in Franklin Co. TN. We may assume this was
Ephraim's brother. He, too, was in Lincoln Co. in 1840.

George Dickey, son of George Dickey appears in the Franklin
Co. TN census list. However he is much younger than Ephraim, so he
may have been a nephew rather than a brother of Ephraim. A younger
Ephraim also appears there.

Early 18th Century

Virginia
In 1751 Michael Dickey was one of the signers for a petition for a
road in Augusta Co. VA. It started at "John Davis' mill", and among
the signers were many Irvins and Irwins as well as John Davies. These
surnames all figured prominently in the early history of York Co. SC.
In fact a great many of the early inhabitants of York Co. had cousins
in Augusta Co., and we may assume that a fair number of them had come
through Augusta on their journey from Pennsylvania.

Later in Rockbridge Co. VA Dickeys intermarried with Clark and then
with Harris, two surnames also important in the Leech Family History.

North Carolina

In 1751 John Kerr and John Dickey were found in Rowan Co, which at
that time included what later became many other counties:
1751 Sam Young settled on 3rd Ck, 4 miles n of Richard Graham.
John Kerr on 3rd ck 2 miles west of Samuel Young
John Dickey settled on the headwaters of Rockey River just east of
Centre Church. (There were a number of 'Rickey Rivers' in both of the
Carolinas.)(Check the book for precise location.)
The Dickey and Kerr families intermarried--probably in NC, but
some of that group got down into SC.

South Carolina

The 1790 York Co. census shows David Leech and John Dickey
adjacent to each other. This may have been the John Dickey who
made his will in 1789 or his son:

A 1791 deed shows the proximity of George Dickey to George
King and Joseph Feemster to David Leech, Esq. on Turkey Creek in York
Co. SC. The first three surnames appear in close proximity to John
and/or David Leech in Franklin Co. TN in the 1830's and in Lawrence
Co. AL before and after the 30's:

By 1810 the only Dickey I found in the York Co. census was James
Dickey, very likely the son and exor of the John Dickey above.

In 1818 James Dickey, as exor of John Dickey, sold 96 acres on
Bullock's Creek to John Blair, part of 300 acres granted to John
Dickey. witnesses were Thomas Sherer and James Graham. This John
Blair may have been a wealthy man in York Co. by that name, or it may
have been John Dickey Blair, one of the heirs, who married Clarissa
Leech in Lawrence Co. AL in 1820.

The third John Dickey (presumably grandson of I and son of II) died in
Lawrence Co. AL in 1826. He had taken up land there a few miles from
John Leech.

One of the interesting things about the above list is that the
Dickey and Kilpatrick families had intermarried years before. Also
James Kilpatrick of Turkey Creek (now in York Co.) was administrator
of William Leech in 1753.
